What would December be without my annual thread on the reality that later sunsets in the afternoon are here!
OK, maybe just a few mere seconds each day, but at least where I live, two days ago, we reached the earliest the sun will set and will now keep adding a few seconds each day (although, the later sunrise each morning means we won't see more total daylight until Dec. 22nd).
Two days ago, the sun set at 240° Southwest, and now we're at 239° Southwest!! I think it's worth celebrating!
And with the busyness of the holiday season among us, our days seem to pass more quickly, so before you know it, on New Year's Eve, our sun will set ten minutes later than it is tonight.

I am 100% with you and counting the days to the return of Daylight Saving Time. The dark depression is real. Spring/summer long afternoons and evenings always end too soon.

The only good thing I've come to recognize about what I can appreciate about these short days of daylight is, I don't have to constantly be thinking about what I need to be doing outside, either in the yard or garden. I can focus on just the inside, and for right now, getting ready for the holidays.
I did go out and pick up poop today - got a couple of bags since last pickup, and they were absolutely frozen! We don't have any snow on the ground, so it's still easy to find. However, frozen poop appeals to our dog, so we have to pick it up before he starts eating it 🤣.

I believe I have made it abundantly clear in here how much I hate cold weather and short days.
I usually have a tiny celebration fir myself when we get through "The Longest Noght". I also go to bed super early the night of. A solid 10+ hours of sleep to get through it is a good way to manage it.
60 Days to warmer days and longer days. 90 days to real summer fun.

@tushnurse - good news is, based on your location of St. Louis, you've gained an additional minute of sun at sunset since I wrote this post! You're on the right trajectory!!

I love winter solstice, for the same reasons, finally light will be coming back and I live in a place with very little light in winter. I also find it magical, and feel a sense of renewal every year at that time. Unfortunately, that is also why we got married on that date (we both loved that time of the year) and it's our 10th anniversary so a bit bitter sweet this year. We were thinking of renewing our vows but I don't want to for now.

Has anyone looked to see what their gain in daylight hours is from the beginning of January to the last day? The farther north you are, the more change you get.
We get a whole 50 minutes! It means dusk will be after 5 by the end of the month!

We got a printoff of the month of January's daily sunrise and sunset times from our electronic weather station. At our LAT/LONG, I was amazed to see that for the first week or more of January, time of our sunrise will be exactly the same (7:33 am) BUT our sunset is going to extend a full minute longer every day! No two days will have the same time of sunset!
A graph showed us the flat line sunrise time gain for at least a week, while it showed steady increase in times to sunset, or length of our total day.
And here I always thought mornings stayed dark because I was sleepy, or whatever! I'm sure it has some scientific explanation.
But haven't we always noticed that days start lengthening as we get home from wherever in the afternoon?

ooh, ooh... do you have one you recommend? We got one several years ago, and it has proven to be faulty, so I'd like to try another one.

Yea, but it sure feels good to see it in writing!
