"Dress Your..." is my favorite. Most people lean towards Holidays, but the way he describes his family in the former is priceless. Paul fascinates me.

"The person [thief] I pictured was in his mid-to-late twenties, with a vibrant tattoo on his neck - something classy, perhaps a scorpion waving a joint. He was like a paper doll I would accessorize with whatever I found irritating that day: He texted during movies. He ate at Chick-fil-A. He put glitter in his thank you letters, and when you opened them the damn stuff got all over everything."
- David Sedaris, Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls
Also? He's coming back to the Bay Area in early May!! (Know this thanks to NIK) Asking Santa for tickets. The venue is pretty big... should be interesting.

A friend and I used to go see him at Royce Hall Auditorium at UCLA whenever he was in L.A.
You absolutely have to go hear him read if you have a chance - his voice and delivery make everything even funnier. I remember him reading the story about a French class he took in France with people from Europe and Africa, and how he tried to explain American holiday traditions to them...you know that kind of laughter where you laugh so hard it becomes painful? Wheezing for breath and tears running down your face? Imagine a whole auditorium like that - it looked like we were in the paroxysms of a mass heart attack, or the entire room had been tasered. We were just wrung out with laughter.
Long way of saying - you have to go!

Yesssss. So there.
(Should I give him a card filled with glitter...?)
ETA: I was looking at his schedule - whoever plans this stuff for him needs some ritalin or something.... He keeps hopping all over the west coast...CA, OR, WA, then SoCal, NorCal, back to SoCal... that is a LOT of traveling to go back and forth every day. Yeesh!

I love him and we saw him in Reno last year. My dh had no idea who he was but was rolling the whole time. Then Sedaris went on the Daily Show the next day and made fun of what the people in Reno wore to his show. TRUTH.

I dunno... if there's any truth in David's descriptions of his dear partner, I think that Hugh might just have David wrapped around his little finger. I find it terribly romantic they way David describes him - he knows all his quirks and has fallen in line with them very lovingly. (While also torturing him with whack gift requests, of course.)
Maybe you need to come see me in May, Rebreather?

He also writes an occasional column in The New Yorker.
I have forwarded his article about wearing a fitbit to at least 15 of my friends. Sometimes the articles turn up (usually reworked in some way) in a future book. I'd recommend checking that out if you like him!!!
(I have also seen him read -- we even passed each other on the stairs of the venue! -- and now every time I read one of his articles or books I hear it in his voice!)

I am a huge fan, I listen to his audiobooks to get to sleep. This started not long after DDay when sleep was elusive, and now it's 6.5 years later and I have listened to all of them, multiple times.
His voice is amazing, the way he subtley shifts tone and pronunciation for the different characters, he is a talented mimic. It's like it was a family past time to use language and voice to laugh about things. His mother was a talented mimic from what he says.
I agree he is loving towards his parents and family members even when describing their flaws. In Diabetes he is very loving and forgiving of his fathers cruelty, and it is kind of moving. Still, I can see it would be hard to be his sibling since he makes so much public.
I am very sad Tiffany, his youngest sister committed suicide this year. He wrote about that in an article, not sure which magazine.
I saw him a few years ago. Very funny. Sometimes he is too scatalogical. I will look at those bay area dates too...

It was in the New Yorker. I think it was around Halloween in 2013. It's amazing how sad you can feel for someone you've never met. I can't find the article right now or I'd link it.
Well, InnerLight, if your rurality is near the Bay Area maybe we'll run into each other in the Spring.

The show was awesome, he's much bawdier in his IRL shows than in his written pieces although with the same self deprecating + people can be difficult perspective of his writing.
He gave the impression of the show not being planned, but likely that's untrue. At the show I saw he talked about his sister. He also takes questions from the audience at the end, and doesn't book signings before & after.
I took my fiancé who wasn't familiar with him & he loved it. It's 3 weeks later & he's still laughing about what he heard.

So cool, cayc. I was having dinner with a friend who saw him a couple years ago, and the reviews are awesome.
I know he's a "no pictures" kind of guy, and we'll all play along and blame it on "the management."

I thought his description of the French class was one of the funniest things I've ever read. (I teach French.)
And who can forget his description of his stint as a Macy's Christmas elf? Hysterical!
