Coelho is one of my favorite authors. I thought "Adultry" was one of the worst books I've ever read and it had nothing to do with the topic. I'm way over that. lol I was just very disappointed with the book. I usually find his characters fascinating and these characters were so ordinary. I expect more from him. I hope he is not going downhill as an author.

Skye,

I think we've discussed Veronika Decides to Die on this thread in the past.

As far as Adultery, I hated the main character. Besides being a cheater, she was evil in other ways. She enjoyed inflicting pain on others (and even an animal at one point). But she was describing a state of psychosis, which I could totally relate to when I was in my As. It was interesting from a wayward perspective.

A strange book, but interesting I thought.

What other book of his do you recommend?

DS, you are forever in my heart. Thank you for sharing your beautiful spirit with me. I will always try to live by the example you have set. I love you and miss you every day and am sorry you had to go so soon, it just doesn't seem fair.

Not a fiction book but it certainly reads like fiction:

Perfection by Julie Metz.

It's a woman's memoir of how she finds out at her husband's funeral (where a neighbor is wailing and being very emotional) that he has been unfaithful for most of her marriage. She embarks on a journey to meet the OW and confront them to figure out exactly what happened and why.

In the end she is empowered.

The Pilot's Wife by Anita Shreve

Books by Tessa Hadley-many touch on infidelity or near-affairs

Will think of more...have read dozens, it seems. Some are good, some not at all realistic or satisfying.

Skinny Dip by Carl Hiaasen

not an infidelity book but one where woman gets revenge on her husband

(he pushes her overboard on a boat, assumes she is dead, and rather than going to the police, she sets about messing with him.)

It's a funny read, and sometimes we all need some funny.

I'm so glad I found this thread! My book club just selected Paulo Coelho's Adultery, and I'm really struggling through it. Everyone else seems to be fine, but it's a mix of people from all over our company and we don't all know each other's back story... so, who really knows.

I'm a fan Coelho's writing in general, but this account from this perspective... it's some kind of excruciating. I can't explain it. On the one hand, I've had a lot of feelings that the narrator has... and on the other, I've been a victim of the fallout of her behavior and choices.

I like his style of writing, but I can't help feeling like I'm watching a trainwreck in extremely slow motion, with my hands tied behind my back. I'm about 1/3 of the way through, and my heart pounds when I tell myself I have to keep reading.

I just needed to put this somewhere.
