My DD's dog crossed rainbow bridge last night just seven weeks after we said goodbye to our sweet boy.

He was just shy of ten and survived cancer for a year. He was so brave and strong right up until the end. My daughter adopted him just months after we got our boy and they left us just weeks apart. I hope they are romping together once again.

We put him to rest last night under the beautiful pine tree next to his friend.

Our little terrier doesn't know yet that he lost another playmate. This was one of the dogs he was spending time with and going for walks with to help with his grief. crying

RIP little guy. 💔

zebra, I'm so sorry to read this. This is the one who had a leg amputated, right? It must have been difficult. What will you do for the little terrier now? Maybe a kitty to play with? Poor doggos!

Thanks Superesse.

Yes, he was the one who had his leg amputated several months ago. He was doing very well until about a month ago. The tumors came back and weren't responding to the chemo.

DD has a retriever that gets along with my little guy but doesn't really care to interact with him. He is more of a people dog.

No cats for my terrier with a prey drive. I adopted him as an adult so he came to me not knowing how to play nice with cats.

I'm not sure what we will do. My H wants a puppy but I don't. I know it sounds silly and I can't really explain it but my grief for our boy is overwhelming. It's still so painful and I'm still crying. I was also attached to DD's dog and spent a lot of time with him so I'm gutted. I just don't know if I want to do this again.

Another concern I have is the lack of vet care. We live in a rural area and have to drive hours to access specialists and sometimes basic care. My terrier was very sick requiring IV fluids this summer. My vet was closed for the day (A weekday) and no other vet would help us out. The emergency vet did not open until 7pm so I had to wait hours or drive hours to get him care. It was awful. I have been with my current vet for twenty plus years and I love her staff but I was very upset that they were closed with no plan for emergencies.

I'm rambling. I guess the bottom line is that I don't feel that pull to get a puppy but I am going to consider my H's feelings and think about our terrier.

So sorry that your DD’s pup has crossed the bridge.

Are there dog parks or doggy daycare for your terrier to get some play time with other dogs?
And I agree that getting another animal too can be a problem in its own right. You’ll know when you are ready or when the pet distribution system puts the right dog in front of you.

And yeah, the vet thing is crazy. SOOOOO expensive and difficult to get an appointment. You are right to think about this. The cost and complexity are real.

Thanks BB.

No dog parks in our area. I'm not a huge fan of them anyway. My boy comes when called unless he doesn't want to so I keep him on a leash. I also worry about dogs I don't know off leash. When the weather warms up I will see about joining A group dog walk and continue to walk him with DD's retriever when I can.

The cat was a good suggestion if only he wouldn't terrorize it. I had a really sweet cat that my dog I had at the time got along with great. They would nap and play together.

Oh my God, I’m just horrified to hear this news. I’m just so very sorry for this little angel who was so brave through so much adversity.

And for your daughter and you.

As you know, the grieving goes on and on. I still have moments where I fall apart over my Maggie May.

Big hugs to you both!

Thank you WhatsRight.

He was so very sweet and brave. The staff and both vet's offices he went to loved him. He never complained and just loved to be held. He was so sick yesterday but still wagged his tail and reached out for me when I said my goodbye.

My poor daughter had a freak accident less than 24 hours after losing her little friend. She got kicked in the ribs by a horse. She is ok. She cracked a rib and is bruised but ok thank God.

Wouldn't it be wonderful to get a 'day pass' and visit that famous Rainbow Bridge? What a good time we would all have.

zebra I'm choking back tears and sobs, as my 2 shepherds here in the room with me, have finally gone to sleep so I don't want to disturb them, actually had to put my hand over my mouth when I read what you said about the little brave one. I'm just stunned with you. I cannot imagine!!!

If I got a day pass to the rainbow bridge, good luck to whoever is in charge finding me to send me back! Just sayin’.

I’m so sorry that your daughter got kicked. Even if it is not terribly serious, on top of losing her little baby, things can just be so hard.

I’m going to go on record in saying that I believe that people are here on this earth to experience joy and heartache and loss…But there should be some kind of rule about how it should all be spaced out. Not so much loss in a row, for Heaven’s sake. Not too much joy in a row either, lest we take it for granted.

"Bless the beasts and the children,
For in this world they have no voice,
They have no choice.
Bless the beasts and the children,
For the world can never be,
The world they see.
Light their way
When the darkness surrounds them;
Give them love, let it shine all around them.
Bless the beasts and the children;
Give them shelter from a storm;
Keep them safe;
Keep them warm."

Lost this one on Jan. 27th at 9.5 years old. She had metastic cancer of the spleen which had spread throughout her chest. There was a significant trachea deviation around one of the tumors. She loved visiting the vet and she was loved by all the staff. It had been a week since she was able to keep food down, yet she went in wagging her whole body. Did her trademark move of putting the top of her head into the vets crotch to get her ears rubbed. I couldn't do their job. It's been a rough few weeks for all of us. Her partner in crime Champ is just now seeming to come out of the doldrums. Took me a few days to stop looking to make sure she was inside before I closed the door.
