Does anyone know a good free app that tracks walking and doesn't have to be start and stopped? I was using MyPlate. It continuosly tracked my movement even when I wasn't actively in the app. However, MyPlate ended their program for the app several months ago.
I tried two other apps, but they all had to be set to start and stop. I always forget to log in to start the app tracking, which is why I need one that tracks constantly and consistently.
Bonus points if it can track bike riding distance and can tell the difference when I'm walking versus when I'm riding my bike.

What kind of phone do you have? I don't know anything about androids, but the Health app on an iPhone will track your steps if you carry it on your walk. I don't know if it can track cycling.

The Apple Health app says it tracks cycling mileage, but that doesn't work for me.

There are lots of free or very low cost apps that track cycling, but most need to be started and stopped unless they are allowed to drain the battery continuously.

That's what I was thinking. Phone apps can't run continuously without depleting the battery. I would suggest a FitBit or something like that to track your walking.

As for bike riding, have you ever used the MapMyRide app? H uses it when he rides, and I actually use the MapMyWalk app when we walk or hike. But if I ran it all day long, from waking to going to bed, it would drain the battery on my iPhone.

Fitbit is the one for me - you can either ask it to start recording steps/calories by type of exercise. It's actually very good at recognising exercise itself - I do a long walk every day, cardio 4 times a week and it recognises that itself. The app is very easy to use, the watch syncs easily to your app/phone.

You can get all kinds of stats, calories, steps, the heart rate stats are great if you buy the right watch.

When I was running a lot a couple years back it was very good for recording pace etc.

I don't think I would have got as fit as I have without it.

Good luck!

Also preowned Fitbits that track walking can be obtained off of places like marketplace fairly in expensively.

A friend has used map my ride and liked it.

They said, I do my research on apps before adding them to my phone because some apps can do things we don’t want them to do like track things we don’t want tracked or steal data.
